So.. yeahǃ Much to a lot of people’s surprise, The Hallowspeak Project has been continuing since the reddit posts from years ago. Even though we rarely post on reddit about the Project anymore, we are still working on Hallowspeak!
The reason we haven’t posted in so long is because we didn’t want to make a big official post when Hallowspeak was changing so much. We’ve been going through a sort of “soft reset”, and we didn’t want to make a post showing where we are, only to change or add a load more stuff so soon after.
Unfortunately, this lead many to doubt whether we were even still working on Hallowspeak. Instead of the large, static posts on reddit, we decided instead to post shorter, but more frequent updates on our partner server, The Shellwood Ordeal. That server is still the best place to ask questions and talk with The Hallowspeak Team.
A lot of, if not most of the Hallowspeak shown in the old reddit posts is completely outdated now. We have changed and redone countless facets of the language, and it’s way better and more accurate now; but that does mean that the old reddit posts are pretty much just archives of the old, deprecated version of the Project.
So then, what’s changed? Well for one, we’ve switched focus from mainly deciphering the written Hallowscript to working on reconstructing the spoken language instead.
In the old versions of Hallowscript in the reddit posts, we decided the sounds of the letters based on how common they were. This was an okay strategy, but it was still guesswork rather than deduction. So now, we figure out the letters by looking at the English text for the lore tablets; and then trying to find the Hallowspeak words in the lore tablet artwork.
But of course, in order to figure out the Hallowscript letters like this, we need to know a lot of Hallowspeak words, and grammar too for more complex ones. That’s why we’re mostly focusing on the spoken language currently.
Apart from that, the only thing that’s changed is the Team! The Hallowspeak Team has grown to over ten members now, and we’re much more experienced in the field of linguistics now than we were back then.
