Phonotactics is the rules in languages about which sounds can go where in syllables and words.
A phonotactic rule in English is that the ‘ng’ sound (like at the end of ‘sing’) cannot come at the start of a word. Don’t confuse this with spelling rules like ‘i before e except after c’. Phonotactics is only about the sounds, not spelling.
